What's painted on the card

Five young men wave long wooden wands at each other on the 1909 card. Each wears different clothes, in different colours, and each holds his wand at a different angle. Nobody is winning. Nobody seems hurt. The wands cross and knock in a jumble, and it's hard to tell if this is a real fight or a rough game. That confusion is the meaning: lots of energy, lots of noise, and five people each pushing their own way with no shared plan.

Five of Wands upright

The Five of Wands shows friction. Too many people want different things, and everyone is talking at once. It might be a group project where nobody agrees, a family argument that keeps going in circles, or competition for the same job, award or attention.

This card is rarely about serious harm. Look at the picture again: no one is bleeding, no one has fallen. It's struggle, not war. Some of it can even be healthy. Competition sharpens your skills, and a good debate can bring out better ideas than polite silence.

The problem comes when the clash has no point. If everyone is fighting to be heard and nobody is listening, nothing gets built. Ask what the argument is actually about. Often a shared goal is hiding under the noise, and naming it can turn five people swinging sticks into a team.

Five of Wands reversed

Reversed, the Five of Wands often means a conflict is winding down. People are tired of fighting, or someone finds the words that let everyone agree. A truce or a fair compromise is possible.

It can also show the opposite: avoiding a conflict that needs to happen. You may keep the peace by staying quiet, while the tension grows underneath. Not every disagreement has to be loud, but an honest one, said calmly, is usually better than one that never gets said.

In love

Upright

In love, the Five of Wands points to bickering, power struggles, or small arguments that keep coming back. It can also show rivals for someone's attention. The energy between you is lively but scattered. Try to argue about the real issue instead of everything at once.

Reversed

Reversed, a period of fighting may be ending, and you're finding calmer ways to talk. Or one of you is avoiding hard topics to keep the peace. Gentle honesty helps.

How someone feels about you

This person has mixed, restless feelings about you. The Five of Wands suggests attraction with friction: they may enjoy the spark of teasing and debate, or feel competitive with you. They could also be torn between different wants, with part of them pulling toward you and part pulling away. It's lively, not calm.

Career and work

Upright

At work, the Five of Wands shows competition or a team with clashing ideas. You may be up against others for a role or a client. Stand out by being clear and fair, and help the group agree on a shared goal.

Reversed

Reversed, workplace tension may be easing, or people are avoiding a necessary discussion. A calm, direct conversation could settle what has been simmering.

Money

Upright

With money, the Five of Wands can show disagreements over shared costs, or competition making it harder to earn. Keep agreements clear and written down.

Reversed

Reversed, a money disagreement may be close to resolving. A fair middle ground is worth more than winning.

Yes or no

Leans no. The Five of Wands shows struggle and mixed views, so a smooth yes is unlikely right now. It could still work out after the competing sides sort things out.

The card's advice

Find the real goal under the noise. Argue about that, listen as much as you speak, and the struggle can become teamwork.

Five of Wands in Starbound's spreads

  • The challenge

In The Bond, the challenge between you is constant friction. You both push for your own way, and small disagreements pile up. The fix isn't to stop disagreeing; it's to agree on what you're both trying to protect.

  • The Path Ahead: What's in the way

On The Path Ahead, the Five of Wands as the obstacle says too many voices are pulling at you. Other people's opinions, or your own competing wants, keep you from moving. Choose whose input truly matters and quiet the rest.

  • Two Paths: Path two: what it asks

If the second path asks for this card, it asks you to compete. That road means pushing for your place, defending your ideas and dealing with rivals. Decide honestly whether that challenge excites you or wears you out.

Questions about Five of Wands

Is the Five of Wands a real fight or just friction?

Usually friction. The young men on the card wave their wands in a jumble, but nobody is hurt and nobody wins. It points to arguments, competition and clashing opinions, not violence. If any situation in your life feels unsafe, trust that feeling and reach out to someone you trust for help.

What does the Five of Wands mean in a group or team?

It shows a group where everyone has ideas but no shared direction. People talk over each other and nothing moves. The card asks someone to step back, name the common goal and give each voice a turn. Handled well, this kind of friction produces better ideas.

Does the Five of Wands mean someone else is interested in my partner?

It can point to rivalry in love, but more often it shows friction between the two of you, or several people with opinions about your relationship. Don't treat it as proof of a rival, and don't go checking up on anyone. If trust feels shaky, say so calmly and talk it through.
