What's painted on the card

On the 1909 card, a young man sits under a tree with his arms crossed and his legs folded. He stares down at three cups lined up on the grass in front of him. From a small cloud at his side, a hand reaches out and offers him a fourth cup. He doesn't look at it. His crossed arms close him off. The picture shows someone so caught up in what he already has, or doesn't want, that a new gift goes unnoticed.

Four of Cups upright

Nothing seems to excite you right now. That is the mood of the Four of Cups. Things that used to please you feel flat, offers seem pointless, and you'd rather sit under your own tree and think. You may be tired, a bit disappointed, or simply bored with the options in front of you.

There is a good side to this. Sometimes you need to withdraw and reflect, to ask what you really want instead of saying yes to everything. The young man is thinking, and that has value. A pause can stop you from chasing things that don't matter.

The warning is in the fourth cup. While you look down at the same three choices, something new is being offered from the side. It may be help, an invitation or a chance that doesn't look like what you expected. Uncross your arms for a moment and look around. You don't have to take it, but you should see it.

Four of Cups reversed

Reversed, the young man lifts his head. You may be coming out of a flat period and feeling curious again. An offer you ignored before now looks interesting, or you finally accept help you had been refusing. Energy that went missing is starting to come back.

Sometimes the reversal shows the opposite: withdrawing even further, shutting out everyone. If the flatness has lasted a long time and nothing brings you any pleasure, it's worth talking to someone you trust or a professional. For most people, though, this card reversed is a sign of waking up and saying yes to life again. Follow the first thing that makes you curious, even if it seems small.

In love

Upright

In love, the Four of Cups can show boredom in a relationship, or losing interest in dating altogether. You might be ignoring someone who is clearly interested in you because they don't match your picture. Ask whether you're closed to love or just tired. Both need different answers. Look up from your cups.

Reversed

Reversed, interest is coming back. You may notice a person you overlooked, or feel ready to put effort into your relationship again. Small gestures can restart a lot of warmth now that you're paying attention, so make the first move.

How someone feels about you

They may be distracted, unsure or emotionally withdrawn. It doesn't always mean they don't care. They might be wrapped up in their own thoughts or problems and not seeing what you offer. Pushing harder rarely works with this card; space and patience usually do. Their attention may come back once their own fog lifts.

Career and work

Upright

At work, you may feel stuck in a routine that no longer interests you. Before you check out completely, look for the offer you might be missing: a project, a course, a person who could open a door. Boredom can be useful information about what you need next. Look to the side, not only down.

Reversed

Reversed, motivation is returning. You're ready to say yes to a new role, a fresh project or support from a mentor. Act on the spark while it's there, even with a small first step. Your curiosity is a better guide than your old habits.

Money

Upright

With money, the Four of Cups can show not noticing a chance to save, earn or get help, because you've stopped looking. It can also show dissatisfaction even when your needs are met. Review your options with fresh eyes before deciding nothing will change.

Reversed

Reversed, you're paying attention again. You may spot a useful offer or finally take up help you were given. A quick check of what's available, such as offers, support or overlooked savings, could pay off.

Yes or no

Leans no. The Four of Cups shows low interest or a pause, so it leans no for now. It can turn into a yes if you notice and accept what is being offered.

The card's advice

Uncross your arms and look up. Take the time you need to think, but don't let a good offer pass by unseen.

Four of Cups in Starbound's spreads

  • The Path Ahead: What's in the way

Blocking the road in The Path Ahead, the Four of Cups says the obstacle is your own lack of interest or energy. You may be dismissing chances too quickly. Ask what would make you care again, and start there. A little interest is enough to begin.

  • Two Paths: Where you stand

At the start of Two Paths, this card shows you're not very excited by either option. That's useful to know. It may mean neither path is right, or that a third choice, like the fourth cup, is waiting just outside your view.

  • The challenge

Sitting in the challenge place of A Quick Look, the Four of Cups shows that apathy or disappointment is the real problem, more than the situation itself. The way forward begins when you let yourself be curious again, even about something small.

Questions about Four of Cups

What is the hand from the cloud offering on the Four of Cups?

The fourth cup is a new chance, gift or kind of help that the young man doesn't notice. In a reading, it's often something you're overlooking because you're focused on old disappointments. It might be a person, an idea or an invitation. The card asks you to at least look at it.

Does the Four of Cups mean someone has lost interest in me?

Not necessarily. It shows withdrawal, which can come from tiredness, stress or their own inner struggles, not only from feelings about you. They may be distracted rather than uninterested. Watch their actions over time, and give them some space instead of reading too much into one quiet phase.

Is the Four of Cups a sign of meditation or self-reflection?

It can be. The young man under the tree is turned inward, and sometimes that's exactly what you need: a break from noise to work out what matters. The card only becomes a problem when reflection turns into shutting out everything good, including the new cup.
