What's painted on the card

On the 1909 card, a horned figure with bat wings sits on a dark block. Below, a naked man and woman stand chained to it. They have small horns and tails, as if they are slowly becoming like the thing that holds them. But look closely at the chains: they hang loose around their necks. Either of them could lift the chain off and walk away. The picture isn't about a monster. It's about how people stay tied to what hurts them, long after they could leave.

The Devil upright

The Devil points to something that has more power over you than it should. It might be a habit you keep returning to, a craving, a debt, a job you stay in only for the money, or a relationship that feels impossible to leave. You may know it isn't good for you and still feel stuck.

This card is not about evil, curses or anything supernatural. It's about very human patterns. Often the trap is made of fear, comfort or shame: the fear of what happens if you let go, the comfort of the familiar, the shame that keeps you quiet.

The loose chains are the hopeful part. The Devil shows that you have more choice than you think. The first step is simply being honest about what has a hold on you. Name it, without blaming yourself, and the grip starts to weaken. If a habit or addiction feels too big to handle alone, a doctor or a support group can help.

The Devil reversed

Reversed, The Devil often shows you starting to lift the chain off. You are seeing a pattern clearly for the first time, cutting back, saying no, or leaving a situation that held you down. It may feel shaky, but it is real progress.

Sometimes the reversed card is a warning instead: the pull is still there, and you may slip back if you aren't careful. Keep your boundaries simple and close to hand. Freedom here grows from small, repeated choices, not one big moment.

In love

Upright

In love, The Devil can show strong physical attraction and intense chemistry, but also a bond that has turned unhealthy: jealousy, possessiveness, or staying together out of fear rather than love. Ask whether you both feel free in this relationship. Love that keeps you small or anxious isn't the kind that lasts well. You deserve a bond where neither of you is chained.

Reversed

Reversed, you or your partner may be breaking an unhealthy pattern, or leaving a relationship that held you back. It takes courage. Lean on friends while you find your feet.

How someone feels about you

If you ask how someone feels about you and The Devil appears, their feelings are intense and may be mixed with desire, need or obsession. They are strongly drawn to you, but it may not be calm or healthy. They might feel pulled toward you against their own better judgement. Look at how they treat you, not only how strongly they feel.

Career and work

Upright

At work, The Devil can show a job you stay in only for the pay, a workplace that drains you, or a habit like overworking that has taken over your life. You may feel there's no way out. Start by looking at what really keeps you there, then list even small options for change.

Reversed

Reversed, you are ready to loosen the hold work has on you. You might set firmer limits, stop chasing approval, or begin planning a move.

Money

Upright

With money, The Devil can point to spending that soothes a feeling, debt that keeps growing, or a fear of never having enough. Notice what you buy and when. For heavy debt, a qualified debt adviser or money counsellor is worth talking to.

Reversed

Reversed, you are taking control back from a money habit. Keep going: simple tracking and one honest look each week can hold the gains.

Yes or no

Leans no. The Devil suggests the thing you want may not be good for you, or may tie you down. It leans no unless the question is about breaking free.

The card's advice

Notice what has a hold on you, and remember the chain is loose. One honest step away from it is enough to start.

The Devil in Starbound's spreads

  • The Crossroads: What holds you back

In The Crossroads, The Devil in this place is very direct: a habit, fear or attachment is the main thing keeping you stuck. It may feel like part of who you are. It isn't. Once you see it for what it is, you can begin to loosen it.

  • The Bond: Them

Showing the other person in The Bond, The Devil suggests they may be caught in something of their own: a habit, a fear or a strong desire that shapes how they act with you. That's theirs to work on. Your part is to keep your own boundaries clear.

  • The challenge

As the challenge in A Quick Look, The Devil names temptation or an old pattern that keeps pulling you back. The challenge isn't to fight it with willpower alone, but to change what feeds it: the people, places or moods that make it hard to say no.

Questions about The Devil

Does The Devil card mean something evil is around you?

No. The Devil isn't about evil spirits, curses or bad luck sent by someone. It's a picture of ordinary human struggles, like habits, cravings and fears that hold on to us. The loose chains on the card show that you have the power to step away.

Can The Devil mean a toxic relationship?

It can, when it appears in a love reading and other signs agree. It points to patterns like jealousy, control or staying together out of fear. If you feel unsafe or controlled, talk to someone you trust or a support service. The card's message is about your freedom, not about changing the other person.

Is The Devil reversed a good sign?

Usually, yes. Reversed, The Devil often means a chain is coming off: you are seeing a pattern clearly, cutting back on something, or leaving a situation that held you down. It can still ask you to stay alert, because old pulls don't vanish overnight.
