Tarot card meaning

The Fool

The Fool means a fresh start taken with an open heart: you step into something new before you know how it ends, trusting yourself and the road more than any plan.

What's painted on the card

On the 1909 card, a young man in a bright flowered tunic walks toward the edge of a cliff. His face is turned up to the sky, not down to his feet. He holds a small white rose in one hand and carries everything he owns in a little bag tied to a stick. A small white dog jumps at his heels, and a big sun shines behind him. He is one step from the drop and doesn't seem worried. The card is about that step: the moment you move before you can see where you'll land.

The Fool upright

When The Fool appears, you are standing at the start of something. It might be a new job, a move, a relationship, a hobby, or simply a new way of thinking about your life. You don't have all the answers yet, and the card says that's fine. Beginnings rarely come with a full map.

The Fool's gift is openness. He carries very little, so he can go anywhere. He looks up, so he notices the world around him. This card asks you to bring the same lightness to your situation: let go of the need to control every detail, say yes to an invitation, try the thing you keep putting off because you might look silly.

The little dog matters too. It is the part of you that stays alert while you explore. Trust is not the same as being careless. You can leap and still watch your step.

The Fool reversed

Reversed, The Fool shows one of two problems. Either you are rushing ahead without thinking, taking a risk that isn't brave so much as careless, or you are frozen at the edge, so afraid of getting it wrong that you never begin.

Both come from the same place: not trusting yourself. If you're about to jump, slow down and check what you're stepping into. If you've been standing still for a long time, ask what small first step would cost you very little. The reversed Fool wants movement with your eyes open.

In love

Upright

In love, The Fool brings something new and playful: a first date, a crush that surprises you, or a fresh, lighter feeling in a long relationship. It favours fun and honesty over big promises. If you're single, be open to someone who isn't your usual type. If you're together, try something neither of you has done before.

Reversed

Reversed, it can point to someone who isn't ready to commit, or to rushing in too fast and skipping the part where you get to know each other. It can also show fear of being hurt again keeping you from starting at all.

How someone feels about you

If you ask how someone feels about you and The Fool appears, they feel excited, curious and a little nervous. You make them feel young and free. They probably aren't thinking about the long term yet; they're enjoying the moment and seeing where it goes. That can be lovely, but don't expect a clear plan from them right now.

Career and work

Upright

At work, The Fool supports new starts: a first job, a career change, a side project or a business idea. You may not feel ready, and that's normal. Learn as you go, ask questions without embarrassment, and keep your options open. Enthusiasm counts for a lot here.

Reversed

Reversed, check before you quit or sign anything on impulse. Do some research and talk to people who know the field. Or, if fear is the real problem, take one small, safe step forward.

Money

Upright

With money, The Fool can mark a new chapter, like a first salary or a fresh budget. It also asks you to stay grounded while things feel exciting. For big money decisions, talk to a qualified adviser.

Reversed

Reversed, it warns against spending on a whim or jumping into a scheme you don't understand. Pause and read the details.

Yes or no

Leans yes. The Fool favours trying something new, so it leans yes, especially to a fresh start. Reversed, it leans toward waiting until you've looked more closely.

The card's advice

Take the first step, even a small one. Travel light, stay curious, and keep one eye on the ground.

The Fool in Starbound's spreads

  • The Crossroads: Your next step

As your next step in The Crossroads, The Fool tells you to begin before you feel fully ready. Waiting for certainty will keep you where you are. Choose the simplest move that takes you somewhere new, and learn from what happens.

  • Two Paths: Path one: what it offers

When The Fool shows what the first of Two Paths offers, that path brings freedom, fresh air and room to grow. It may be the less safe option on paper, but it gives you a chance to find out who you are outside your usual habits.

  • The Bond: Them

Placed on the other person in The Bond, The Fool describes someone who is free-spirited, spontaneous and maybe a bit unpredictable. They bring fun and new energy. They may also avoid heavy talks or fixed plans, at least for now.

Questions about The Fool

Is The Fool a good card?

Mostly, yes. The Fool is about fresh starts, hope and possibility. The only warning is about balance: trusting the moment is good, but ignoring real risks isn't. If the cards around it are calm, The Fool is an encouraging sign to begin.

What does The Fool mean as a person?

As a person, The Fool is someone young at heart, whatever their age. They are adventurous, honest, easy to be around and quick to say yes to new things. They can also be impatient with rules and not great at planning ahead.

What does The Fool mean next to The World?

The Fool opens the major cards and The World closes them, so together they show an ending and a beginning meeting. One chapter of your life is complete, and you are already standing at the start of the next one. It's a good moment to celebrate what you finished before you set off again.
